Chiropractic is a global health science profession that concentrates on the natural maintenance and restoration of health through optimizing the Neuromusculoskeletal system. Chiropractors believe all health and function comes from the brain and is transmitted through nerve impulses down the spine to the rest of the body. Every cell, tissue, organ and system relies on these nerve impulses to remain in a state of homeostasis.

Chiropractic as an organized profession began in Davenport Iowa in 1895, by Daniel D. Palmer. However, manual manipulations of the spine dates back to Ancient Egypt. It is the largest drug-less health profession and ranks 3rd among all doctoral professions behind medicine and dentistry. It is often referred to as a CAM Complimentary Alternative Medicine.

The axial spine is made up of numerous bones that have interconnecting joints to allow for mobility. Within the bony structure of the skull, spinal bones and pelvis are the delicate brain, spinal cord and nerves. The vertebrae, or spinal bones protect the nerves. The joints between the spinal bones allow for flexibility while maintaining protection.

Misalignment or malfunctions can occur between these joints called subluxations. This physical alteration can cause interference to the transmission of nerve impulses and affect health. Chiropractors locate malfunctions in the spine through palpation (feeling with the hands), radiographs (x-rays) and in recent years instruments that measure nerve flow, temperature, muscle activity, etc.

Spinal interference or subluxations are corrected through manual manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to the joints with the hands.
