What is Cold Laser Therapy? And What Does it Do?
Chiropractic-Wiki Topic: What is Cold Laser Therapy?
Cold Laser Therapy is a non-invasive, “light” therapy that can successfully relieve pain, inflammation and promote healing.
Laser Therapy is Not So New
Although it’s only been in the last 10-15 years you’ve heard of laser treatments, it’s actually an old technology. It’s just been made more accessible and user friendly.
The first scientific paper on laser’s effect on living tissue was in 1969. Researchers discovered that a monochromatic light shined on the body of a rat stimulated the brain. It was later found that a certain wavelength of light gave beneficial effects.
The problem was like early computers, the equipment needed to generate this focused light beam was quite large and generated a lot of heat.
Today’s Lasers
That brings us to today. The power needed to generate a therapeutic light beam is much less than before. It can come from a lithium battery pack. Additionally the mechanism that creates the light has been reduced down to a handheld unit. So the power and light generation source can be held in your hand now. That’s a game changer!
Why Cold?
Cold refers to the light beam itself. A “cold” laser generates a beam of light in a specific spectrum that does not generate heat where it is aimed. Importantly, the cold laser does not destroy tissue. Other, “hot” lasers are used in medicine to cut or destroy biologic tissue. These are used by surgeons, dermatologists and dentists.
What Does it Feel Like to Have Cold Laser Therapy?
Actually, you feel nothing! The light therapy has no sensation. A specific beam of red light is aimed at certain points of the body and a couple of different frequencies are used depending on the condition. The treatment times are short, a few minutes. It’s a very easy therapy. The effects can be felt after several minutes to hours and some people notice an immediate result.
Side Effects of Cold Laser?
The only side effects are eye injuries if the beam is aimed at the eyes or if you sit and stair at the beam. Doctors are careful to aim the beam away from your vision or ask you to wear special laser glasses that block some of the energy.
