- Images can be examined with multiple tools to compare the results with normal studies
- Images are conveniently stored in digital format so they can be shared with other doctors easily
When do I need x-rays?
The criteria used for taking x-rays is based on the individual patient, and include:
- Trauma: if you’ve had a trauma from a car accident, sports injury, slip and fall or an injury around the home, Dr. Marks may want to take an x-ray to make sure nothing is broken.
- Unexplained joint or limb swelling: swelling may be a sign of infection in the bone or joints or a sign of arthritis or other disorders the doctor will want to rule out before doing physical work on you.
- Chronic pain: if you’ve had pain that was not originally caused by trauma, but it is persisting longer than your doctor thinks it should then an x-ray me be obtained to see if there are any underlying problems that need to be addressed.
- Radiating pains: if you have pain that stems in the neck or back and radiates down your arm or leg, the cause needs to be investigated.
Who doesn’t get x-rays?
Dr. Marks never takes unnecessary x-rays. He will not take x-rays just because you are curious. He does not take x-rays on every single patient as part of a common routine. Children are not given x-rays unless there is a very good reason like trauma or swelling. X-rays are valuable diagnostic tools, but must be performed when necessary to limit your exposure.
