Car Accident Injuries (whiplash) are a common problem, but are often "under-diagnosed" by emergency room physicians, HMO doctors, family medical doctors and general chiropractors.

Improperly diagnosed cases of whiplash result in inadequate treatment and life long problems and suffering.

Any doctor can evaluate and treat a car accident victim, there are no regulatory rules constraining doctors. Unfortunately, ER physicians, HMO doctors, your family medical physician and even your general chiropractor are likely unaware of all the complexities involved in this type of injury. Because of this, they often underplay or minimize injuries. In many cases they will completely miss less than obvious injuries and will almost never catch the hidden injuries that often develop after an auto accident.

Hidden auto accident injuries...

Several problems can exist that do not show up immediately after an auto accident injury or are not easily seen. These include:

Occult or difficult to see fractures of the spine, ribs and extremities
Ligament damage of the neck or back
Improper alignment of the spinal bones
"Dashboard knee"
Latent lumbar disc herniation
"Mild traumatic brain injury" (MTBI)

The problem is that even a good medical physician or general chiropractor does not have specific expertise and training in this highly specialized field of medicine.
No, treating a car accident injury is not brain surgery, BUT it is a field of potentially life-changing conditions that can have devastating repercussions if not properly managed. Failure to properly diagnose a spinal fracture is obviously quite serious. SO too is failing to recognize other important signs on x-ray often ignored by general doctors. Some doctors fail to even take x-rays after an auto accident.

Is your current doctor a car accident injury specialist?…
At minimum, your treating doctor should:

Conduct a thorough consultation asking about your medical condition and pain, but also details about your accident to reconstruct the accident to know what injuries to look out for
Ask you about your seating position, head restraint position, etc
Ask about bruises or red marks on your abdomen and chest, especially in children
Perform a through physical examination testing your muscles, joints, nerves and brain
Take appropriate x-rays including views of the side, front, front with mouth open and bending forward and backward
Perform other non-invasive specialized tests to locate and document injuries that may be hidden to a cursory exam or x-ray
Explain to you in writing what is wrong with you, how severe it is and what can be done to correct your problem
Give you examples of past patients who have been rehabilitated by their treatment after an auto accident injury
Perform periodic re-examinations to ensure treatment is working and to discover if any other tests or exams are needed.
Be able to communicate with your lawyer, order further tests or specialists opinions and testify in court if needed
